on the road with a friend

I'm writing this from the road. It's summer--time, Ray tells me, for vacations and adventures that do not involve 1.) snow, 2.) near-death experiences, or 3.) work. This leaves out most of my hobbies, so I let him decide on a mutual vacation, which in Ray's mind meant one thing: road trip.

I actually haven't seen a great deal of the States, so Ray suggested we just wander--driving until we're tired, checking into motels when we want to stop for the night. He even suggested picking up camping gear and camping, though I wish he'd suggested that before we started, as I certainly have more than enough gear to reasonably equip both of us. (Ray did point out that my gear is more suitable to temperatures between -20C and 0C, however, so perhaps it's not the best gear for Missouri in late July.)

At the moment I'm in a cafe--with free wireless internet access, I might add, even though we're in what Ray calls the middle of nowhere; I think he doesn't remember the Yukon as clearly as he claims--and I'm waiting for him to fill the GTO's gas tank and join me for lunch. And I'm thinking about how good this has been, how I wake up in the mornings glad it isn't over yet. Sooner or later we'll have to go home, and this will come to an end, and before that happens, I have to tell him. I have to tell him why I'm here--I've seen the way he's been looking at me; I don't think he'll be shocked--and I have to tell him why it can't happen.

I don't know, though. Sometimes, when we're out in the middle of nowhere, I wonder. Sometimes, out here, anything seems possible.
